Privacy Policy – Screen Off Recorder

Overview

Screen Off Recorder ("the App") lets you record video and audio while the screen is off or the app is backgrounded. This policy explains what data the App accesses, how it is used, and whether any of it leaves your device.

        Short version: All recordings stay on your device. The developer never
        collects, stores, or transmits your videos, audio, or location. The only outbound network
        activity is ads served by Google AdMob.
      

Permissions & Data Access

CAMERA

Used exclusively to capture video frames during a recording session. No camera feed is transmitted over the network or shared with third parties. The App intentionally suppresses the live preview so recording works with the screen off.

RECORD_AUDIO

Used to capture the microphone signal into the recording. Audio can be disabled in Settings. Audio data is written only to the output MP4 file on your device.

ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION

Requested only when the Location Overlay option is enabled in Settings. If enabled, the App resolves your location once at the start of each recording session and burns the human-readable address into the bottom corner of every video frame as a text overlay. Location data is never stored separately, never uploaded, and never shared. If the overlay is disabled, these permissions are not used.

READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE

Used to write raw recording segments and merged MP4 files to Movies/OffscreenRecorder/ on your device. On Android 9 and below this requires explicit storage permission; on Android 10+ the App uses scoped storage. You can optionally point the App to a custom folder via the Storage Access Framework picker in Settings, in which case files are written there instead.

FOREGROUND_SERVICE WAKE_LOCK

Required to keep the recording service alive while the screen is off. A persistent notification is shown whenever recording is active. A partial wake lock prevents the CPU from sleeping mid-session.

POST_NOTIFICATIONS

Used solely to display the foreground-service recording notification and its controls (Pause / Stop).

REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS

The App may request battery-optimization exemption to prevent the OS from killing long recording sessions. No data is collected as a result of this permission.

SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW

May be used to display a minimal recording-status indicator while the App is in the background. This overlay contains no user data.

INTERNET ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE

Used only by Google AdMob to display advertisements. See the Advertising section below for details.

Data Stored on Your Device

Raw segments — Fixed-length MP4 clips written to Movies/OffscreenRecorder/clips/ during recording. Deleted automatically after a successful merge.
Merged recordings — Final MP4 file written to Movies/OffscreenRecorder/merged/ (or your chosen SAF folder). The filename includes a device identifier (ANDROID_ID) and the recording timestamp; this is for local file organisation only and is never transmitted.
App preferences — Camera facing, resolution, audio on/off, overlay toggles, and optional SAF folder URI stored locally via Android DataStore. Not shared with the developer.

Data Transmission

The App does not have its own backend. No videos, audio, location data, device identifiers, or usage analytics are ever sent to the developer's servers.

The only outbound network calls are made by the Google AdMob SDK (see below).

Advertising (Google AdMob)

The App displays ads provided by Google AdMob. Google may collect and use data on your device to serve personalised or non-personalised ads in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy.

This may include advertising identifiers (GAID / Android Advertising ID) and general device information. You can reset or opt out of ad personalisation at any time in your device settings under Google > Ads.

The developer does not have access to, and does not receive, any user-level data collected by AdMob beyond aggregated, anonymised revenue metrics.

Data Sharing

The App does not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal information to third parties. The only exception is the AdMob SDK described above, which operates under Google's own privacy terms.

When you use the system Share button inside the App, your chosen video is sent to whichever external app you select. This action is entirely under your control.

Children's Privacy

The App is not directed at children under the age of 13. The developer does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Data Retention & Deletion

All data (recordings and preferences) resides on your device. You can delete recordings at any time from within the App or from your device's file manager. Uninstalling the App removes all preferences; recordings in external storage may persist and can be deleted manually.

Changes to This Policy

This policy may be updated from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the App after a policy update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
